Occupy Elsevier? | The Scientist

Nearly 4,500 researchers have signed an agreement to refrain from publishing in, refereeing, and/or performing editorial services for journals produced by the science-publishing behemoth Elsevier. But the publisher of several well-respected life-science journals, including Cell and The Lancet, maintains that a misunderstanding of its intentions, and not unfair business practices, are fueling the boycott.

Picking sides in A Science Debate

Posted by: "David Supertraining International" david@supertraininginternational.com   driscoll_david

At the core of so many issues confronting us today is a foundation of science and, all too often, there is a debate about the nature of that science. For the general population this presents a puzzling dilemma; how do you pick the right side in a science debate? This dilemma is complicated by the fact that most of us are not equipped with a level of knowledge, or the correct training to understand its context, to be able to decide upon points at issue in some very complex sciences.

Visual Cues Encourage Vegetable Consumption: Scientific American Pod

Americans still fall short of the recommended daily portions of fruits and vegetables. And kids are notoriously averse to veggies at the school cafeteria. So researchers tested whether visual cues of healthful foods could increase consumption at a grade school with 800 students.

I recall discussions on clenbuterol as a performance enhancer going back
to the early eighties. It is often used with livestock. It makes confined
calves and lambs gain muscle mass even though they get little or no
exercise.

I don't believe the original intent of the drug. It was effective in
treating respiratory infections in animals housed together in confined places.

And what owners discovered is that animals on the drug gained muscle mass.

Cool interview (yes I'm a little behind in my podcasts) especially Steve Mirsky's point re active ingredients possibly being 'activated' during digestion this affecting research, health claims and final delivery of a product. (about 13 mins in)
