NAIROBI - A lobby group has launched efforts to have Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta's case at the International Criminal Court (ICC) dropped.
The Kenya Citizens Coalition will begin collecting signatures to stop the cases on grounds that the prosecution carried out shoddy investigations and chose to rely on NGOs and Non
state actors whose evidence they claim cannot stand the test of time.
The group claims there has been a deliberate distortion of facts concerning the case mainly by the office of the prosecutor.
On Oct 8, Kenyatta attended a status conference at the court to determine the admissibility of the charges leveled against him but the prosecution requested to have the case postponed indefinitely for lack of solid evidence.
The prosecution claimed the Kenyan government has been reluctant in providing it with the needed support, claims that have been rubbished by the civil society who read it as a tactic to tarnish Kenya's image.
The Coalition say the case should have collapsed at the pre-trial chamber and blamed Judge Ekaterina Trendafilova for allowing the prosecution to suppress recanted evidence of witness number 4.
A campaign has now been launched by the group to collect signatures from Kenyans that will help it prepare a memorandum condemning the ICC that will be presented to the United Nations Security Council, the African Union, the European Union and the assembly of state parties to the ICC to lobby for the dissolution of the case.
Besides Kenyatta, others accused of crimes against humanity by the ICC into the 2007-2008 post-election violence in Kenya are Deputy President William Ruto, Henry Kosgey, Francis Muthaura, radio executive Joshua Arap Sang and former police commissioner Mohammed Hussein Ali.
The ICC confirmed the charges against Kenyatta, Ruto, and Sang and declined to confirm the charges against Ali, Kosgey, and Muthaura. The trial of Ruto and Sang began on Sept 10, 2013.
