Football: Mashaba to name new goalkeeper

IT HAS been a very difficult week for Shakes Mashaba in light of the death of Bafana Bafana skipper Senzo Meyiwa.

But it gets worse for the Bafana coach who has to pick a team, without his team captain and first-choice goalkeeper.

Mashaba returns to office tomorrow to announce the team for the remaining 2015 African Nations Cup qualifier matches against Sudan and Nigeria.

Mashaba is faced with the tough task of replacing Meyiwa, not only the shot-stopper in the team, but the character, leadership and the inspiration the late star brought to the team.

And it remains to be seen whether Mashaba will once again pick an inexperienced goalie, or whether he will elevate assistant Darren Keet to the starting line-up.

“Even as we were sitting deliberating on the squad for our next qualifier match, Senzo’s name was top of the list for the squad. His name always came first,” said Mashaba.

Meyiwa kept a clean sheet in all four matches, ensuring the team remains top of the group without a loss.

Without the injured Itumeleng Khune, Mashaba could go for Moeneeb Josephs, a proven keeper with tons of international experience, having been part of the Bafana set-up before.

The Bidvest Wits goalie has picked himself up with improved performances, following the African Nations Championship disaster in January.

It would not come as a shock also should Mashaba opt for SuperSport United youngster Ronwen Williams.

Williams had a debut to forget when he leaked five goals in a friendly against Brazil in March, but he did well against New Zealand two months later and he has been back in Bafana’s radar ever since, despite a regime change.

Bafana, however, sit on the verge of qualifying for the finals in Morocco and not too much can be left to chance at this stage.

South Africa tops group A with eight points and victory over Sudan, whom they host in Durban on November 15, will seal qualification before they take on nemesis Nigeria in the last qualifier fixture.

The game against Sudan was scheduled for the Mbombela Stadium, but it will now be staged at Moses Mabhida Stadium in honour of Meyiwa.
