3 Things You Need to Know Today: March 5, 2014

Happy Hump Day! Here are a few newsy tidbits to inspire conversation.

Don’t Panic, but an Asteroid is Passing Through… Tonight100-foot wide asteroid will pass between the moon and Earth around 5:07 EST–if you’re interested, you can watch it online at this website. According to the folks whose job it is to monitor flying space rocks, this one will be whizzing by closer than the moon’s orbit, but still at a
“safe” distance.

Edward Snowden to Speak at SXSWWow, what? Ex-NSA employee and whistleblower Edward Snowden apparently is doing U.S. speaking gigs, despite the fact that he can never set foot on American soil. He’ll be on the phone from his living room in Russia at this year’s South by Southwest Interactive Festival to speak about how the tech community can protect its privacy. Guess who’s also slated to speak… WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Props to the booker on this one.

Game of Drones: Facebook Aims for the SkyRumor has it that Facebook is in talks to buy Titan Aerospace, a drone company that would allow them to establish sky-based internet access. Folks say they are hoping to use the drones to expand internet access into developing countries. Between Google’s internet helium balloons and Amazon’s delivery drones (both still in experimental stages) they’d better get in line–it’s getting crowded up there.
Bonus…

Dancing with the Stars Cast AnnouncedJust in case you missed it (and if you did, honestly, shame on you) the cast of the next Dancing with the Stars has been announced. For anyone curious about whether Candace Cameron can bust a move, if NeNe Leakes has rhythm, or if Billy Dee Williams has still got it… well, sit back and enjoy. As for the rest, can I interest you in a one-way ticket to hell? Because it’s gotta be better than this.

Interweb consensus in the last 12 or so hours says this celebrity-packed clip is but a viral video… but for what?
