US spy author Tom Clancy dies at 66

Tom Clancy, the best-selling author of several successful military and technological thrillers, has died at the age of 66. The American publishing company Penguin Group confirmed on Wednesday that Clancy died in Baltimore on Tuesday, but did not disclose a cause of death. "He was a consummate author, creating the modern-day thriller, and was one of the most visionary storytellers of our time," said Penguin Group executive David Shanks in a statement. "I will miss him dearly and he will be missed by tens of millions of readers worldwide," added Shanks, who was involved in the publication of all of Clancy's works. His many books, starting in 1984 with The Hunt for Red October and continuing through The Sum of All Fears, Rainbow Six and the upcoming Command Authority painted detailed stories of the world of spies, soldiers and politicians. He had said his dream had been simply to publish a good book so that he would be in the Library of Congress catalog. His books have inspired many popular movies and video games.
