Patterns have proven to be an extremely important trend this season thus giving Ankara an opportunity to flourish. But now, It is definitely not your mama’s traditional skirt and blouse ensemble. We are now seeing it in cropped tops, high waist shorts, Peplum tops, pleated skirts etc.
Both new and established designers are now transforming modern pieces into African chic. And you should too.

- In the photo above, I decided to put a little spin on one of my favorite Ankara pieces and make it totally modern.
I achieved my look by pairing a cool Ankara peplum top with summer torn boyfriend jeans. Boyfriend jeans are a super hot trend, they are comfortable, sexy and look awesome on almost all body types (if the lose-fitted jean look is not your thing you can substitute with a pair of torn skinny jeans).
It would be too predictable and almost too classic to pair this look with a classic pump – so I strongly suggest going with an ankle bootie or a very cool/edgy pair of sandals. Edgy shoes will totally compliment the raw look of the jeans.
Lastly, to balance everything going on with this look, I opted for a classic tote and sunglasses. This created a happy medium between the various trends and delivering a very modern take on Ankara. This outfit can be worn during the day or for a casual night event.

- The cool thing is that you don’t have to stop with just Ankara. Feel free to explore with lace.
It is totally easy to recreate these looks, the key is to think a little outside the box and forget traditional.
- By mixing opposites pieces i.e. edgy jeans with a classic Ankara top you are guaranteed to give it a modern touch. You could also just throw on a very cool dress or pant suit and make it modern with accessories, hair styles and of course shoes.
