I have many clients, friends and family that are finding people to check out on the dating sites. The most successful people seem to have learned to be careful to not just chit chat via email but make extensive interview conversations and a prior meet up in a safe place (lots of people around) before making a date. People seem to like less the sites that match you primarily with others in the same job or income level.
Other' folks check out clubs or social groups around their hobbies so checking out where people get together who like the same animals you like may be a start. We have a large park in my area and a large meadow in the park is primarily used for people to play with their dogs. All the dog people are there each day and meeting new friends who also may know
