I'm sure many of our list are surprised and dismayed by the current murder investigation and now steroid cloud that has enveloped what was a story of inspiration and hope for many folks around the world. This morning my news feed here came out with "two boxes of testosterone and needles found in his residence".

Any comments or in particular, insight from our South African folks on this story?

As I recall, our original thread regarding testing and the problems with people of certain physical issues doing PEDs and other complications was that this was a very poor strategy for most and that it was highly unlikely a person with this gentlemen's challenges would use a PED.... that usage could be fatal? drug testing was not usually needed in the other elite events intended for paraOlympians and others in the physically challenged world?

As this whole story unfolds, I cannot help feeling very sad for the family and friends of the young lady who lost her life. With the initial speculation that he had mistaken her for an intruder, I remember Mel's comments about how things were when he left South Africa - that "hosts always go first into a room" and that you never knew what might happen. Although the couple lived in a controlled compound, that it was possible to have home invasion and that being mistaken for an intruder could easily happen. :(

I've heard similar comments from acquaintances who left SA for the same
reason. They said that with the fear of home invasion that permeates the
country, what happened is sad but not surprising.
