After reading this about the kinesio tape and lack of support by way of the studies so far, I think there are really three questions:
1. If the claimed clearing out effect or promotion of healing cannot be proven by a study, how then would we prove it "helps" the athlete or not? Does anyone have an idea how this could be achieved or know a new study that may be doing a better job on proving or disproving the alleged effects?
2. Noting the placebo effect may be highly in play here - does this not suggest that if the athlete BELIEVES something helps them, it does? That is, if the special tape is applied, the athlete's own mind and body will respond because of belief in the use, not any intrinsic value?
3. I think the other question I've had after examining a roll I bought some time ago but did not feel gave me any tangible in my own experience benefits (it sits dusty on a shelf now after 8 months of experimentation on my own body) is that some athletes appear to be using it as a flexible "support" - that is, some are doing a notable patellar band taping and ankle supporting with it that looks like a more flexible rendition of a normal athletic tape. One question I have about this use is if the tape gives slightly when the athlete's muscles expand or flexes with a joint, isn't this a good usage of the tape overall vs a more conventional and less flexible (possibly constricting) tape job? At least for minor injuries or supportive use?
Lastly, it appears to be acceptable to tape an athlete to a major extent with this tape, having noted some entire posterior of an upper leg (entire hamstrings) taped up completely on a track athlete, a good 2/3 of the erectors on a diver, and other major applications of tape being present throughout the sports. Might not the tape be used to convince another athlete his competitor has a major "weakness" present by a good deal of "cosmetic" application too by a crafty coach? :)
So far I have decided not to include such taping in my rehab practice but I'd like to hear comments to the above and experiences of athletes on the above questions as well as anything else we as a group wish to discuss on the topic. :)

It's everywhere: on abs, legs, backs, even backsides.
.
The neon tape swathing sprinters and swimmers alike, called Kinesio, is
taking London by storm.
.
"It's all over the Olympics," said Dr. Jennifer Solomon of New York City's
Hospital for Special Surgery. "Athletes love it."
.
Developed by a Japanese chiropractor, Kinesio claims to cut pain and boost
performance. And judging by its prominence at this year's Games, athletes
think it works.
.
"If you ask them, they say it does," said Solomon, team physician for the
U.S. Tennis Association. "But there's no solid scientific evidence that
this tape helps."
.
Crafted from cotton and medical grade adhesive, Kinesio is more flexible
than traditional tape. And when strategically strewn along injured
muscles, its gentle tug promotes circulation to help clear out damage,
according to its maker.
.
"No one's claiming this is a cure," said Michael Good, international
director for the Albuquerque, N.M.-based company. "It's an adjunct
therapy."
.
But a slew of studies that failed to find bona fide benefits have some
experts skeptical.
.
"It might have some small role in the rehab process," said Dr. Dennis
Cardone, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone Medical
Center in New York. "But without evidence, we can't say it's doing
anything near what the company claims or what athletes using it say they
feel."
.
The effort to tease out the tape's true benefits is complicated by the
placebo effect.

Hi Guys,
I was wondering on the best way to calculate volume load for a unilateral exercise such as a bulgarian split squat?
At present i am doubling the reps and load for each leg to reach a figure. Is this appropriate?
Thanks
Andy
