Photographs were still faked long ago, it just took a bit more effort. Photoshop and the net just made it easier and a lot more pervasive.
Ask yourself "who benefits" and you get an answer financially usually when fake photos are produced.

This picture has been on the wall of a Shri Chinmoy vegan restaurant here in San Diego, where I have been eating for the last 20 years. The staff gives free meditation classes, so this is where I took the A squad of the Mens National Volleyball Team to learn meditation after a nice breakfast. As their strength coach I was assailed with numerous questions from my athletes regarding Chinmoy's lift. Real or bogus?
Chinmoy did some extraordinary physical feats and had an impeccable reputation as a guru of meditation and healthful living. As a coach who maintains we can do rather incredible things, I am inclined to believe Chinmoy may have done it. I would like to believe it because of what it says about human's capacity to perform awesome feats of strength and power. However without witnessing the lift I can't say for sure.
