Fitness Books Help You Stay on Course Toward Goals
Two books about fitness cover a topic many normal humans struggle with:
how to not be a quitter.

Marshall Ulrich's fast-paced Running on Empty covers lots of ground, from
his struggle with heartbreak and bad health to his makeover into one of
the world's toughest elite athletes. In this 2011 memoir (reprinted in
paperback this month), Ulrich shows he feels most alive when he's pushing
himself to the limit. Based on his track record, he feels alive often.
.
When his wife was dying of breast cancer in 1980, his blood pressure
started to soar and he began to worry about his own mortality. He was only
29. His doctor and his brother told him to start exercising. He put on a
pair of Converse sneakers and headed out the door.
.
"I wondered why the hell any adult would run if he didn't have to," he
writes. "I didn't like the feeling of gasping for air, my leg muscles
straining, my feet slapping the pavement."
.
The next day he was hurting. He didn't want to run again, but he didn't
stop.
.
Among his feats: he finished the Badwater Ultramarathon, a 135-mile run
across Death Valley in the summer, 17 times; climbed the seven highest
summits in the world, including Everest, and completed a transcontinental
run of the USA when he was 57 (70 miles a day). Did he contemplate
throwing in the towel? Of course but for him, quitting is not an option.
His tips:
.
Keep pushing. Everyone wants to quit sometimes, he writes, adding that he
expects the dips that try to zap enthusiasm. "New obstacles will arise,
but even when everything aches and you think you have nothing left, you
do."
.
Keep it interesting. Try new things and set new goals. Running in races
and searching for new summits kept him challenged.
.
Keep your confidence. Know you will succeed, keep looking forward and
never look back.
