After almost four days of angry protests by tens of thousands of Burkinabe citizens, President Blaise Compaore has resigned from the Presidency according to a government spokesman, reports the BBC.
“The president of Faso has decided to hand in his resignation,” Ibrahiman Sakande, communications director in the presidency, announced earlier today.
Just yesterday, President Compaore appeared determined to remain in power through November 2015 to finish his term, despite an announcement by the country’s military that it had dissolved parliament and all government institutions.
There are reports of jubilation in the streets of the capital, Ouagadougou, after the
announcement of President Compaore’s resignation became public.
Several people are known to have died in the protests although an exact number is yet to be determined.
