Report reaching our news-desk this morning, through an eyewitness report, gave an oral account of how Ekurede-Itsekiri Community youths almost killed an Itsekiri young man fighting for his family’s land.
The incident occurred on the 9th of July 2018, at around 9:30am in the morning.
According to the eye-witness,
“ the Itsekiri young man was walking by his family’s land and saw some Ekurede-Itsekiri youth digging a portion the land and asked those digging who gave them the authority to dig his family’s land and the youth ignored him and continued with their digging, this infuriated the young man and he asked those digging to leave the family property until they can provide who gave them the authority. I saw him leaving not knowing why. When he left the youths continued their digging.
He came back and this time told one Moses popularly known as Khalil(the one digging the land) that he should leave the land or he will be force to take take action against him and the rest of the youths, that was when the youths said they have been paid to dig that portion of the land. I remember him saying that I am coming back to cover the pit.
He came back to cover the pit and as he was doing so, he youths then pounced on him and started beating him, with the sticks shovel and some serious blows was dished, he was dragged on the ground by these youth and some were saying that they will kill him if he does not leave the land.
The young man stood up walked back to the pit that was dugged and continued covering the pit without saying a word to anyone. That was when it dawned on me that this young man has not come to make trouble but to simply make a statement that that land belongs to his family and he would defend it with his last strength. Again the youths pound on him this time without mercy and beat him till took him to the townhall.
I did not know what transpired in the community townhall but the youth chairman(Abel Olugbo aka Ese Olugbo) cameback and was saying that the land belongs to his family and that the young man’s family has no land in Ekurede-Itsekiri, so the youth chairman order the boys to complete the digging of the land and erect the pillar.
The young man tried running aways but was dragged back and  beaten by these youths on the order of the chairman while they erect the pillar/pole.
The pillar fell and narrowly missed one of the boys, that was when the youth chairman took the young man away. Later that day when I came back I saw that the pillar has been erected.

Frankly,  I still do not know the name of that young man but was later told he was the grand son of the owner of the land(who is now deceased and was buried in the land the young man was trying so hard to protect).”
All effort to reach the youth chairman to comment on the incident was abortive and the young man we where told was receiving treatment. We will update you as the story progresses.
