Dr. Mehmet Oz has a message for all dieters who can't seem to achieve their weight loss goals. The secret to slimming down might be as simple as eliminating three foods. He unveiled the newest discoveries about how to harness the power of your mind to eat less and feel fuller on his Oct. 9 talk show.

Dr. Brian Wansink is a food psychologist specializing in weight loss at Cornell University and author of "Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think." He revealed that your kitchen plays a key role in determining your fat fate. Based on his studies, Wansink says that he can predict how much weight you will gain or lose in the next year, and three foods play a particularly significant role.

If you have corn chips or potato chips on your kitchen counter, you weigh an average of nine pounds more than someone who avoids those counter-top snacks. If breakfast cereal reigns in your kitchen, you weigh 21 pounds more on average than a dieter who punts the Post-Toasties. And if your kitchen is bubbling over with soda, you weigh an average of 25 pounds more than someone who doesn't drink soda.

In contrast, if your fruit bowl is the focus of your counter, you are apt to weigh eight pounds less. Wansink recommends making it easy to eat fruit rather than cake by cutting up fruit and putting it on the top shelf of the refrigerator. His studies revealed that children are 70 percent more likely to eat fruit if it's already chopped up.

So just which fruit is the best for weight loss? A new study reveals that grapefruit is the winner, according to the Los Angeles Times on Oct. 9.

UC Berkeley researchers discovered that mice who sipped grapefruit juice gained less weight. They also had healthier blood sugar levels and improved insulin sensitivity. Grapefruit made the biggest difference in weight loss when mice ate a diet high in fat.

However, before you dash out and load up on grapefruit, it's worth noting that the study was funded by the California Grapefruit Growers Cooperative. But the researchers said that they had no bias and initially felt skeptical about grapefruit's weight loss powers until they uncovered their positive results.
