Irish voters back gay marriage in ‘social revolution’

DUBLIN (Reuters) – Irish voters backed same-sex marriage by a landslide in a referendum marking a dramatic social shift in the traditionally Catholic country, government ministers and opponents of the bill said on Saturday.

Final results were not expected until later in the day, but ministers predicted Ireland had become the first country to adopt same-sex marriage via a popular vote by a margin of around two-to-one, just two decades after it decriminalized homosexuality.

“This has really touched a nerve in Ireland,” Equality Minister Aodhan O’Riordain said at the main count center in Dublin. “It’s a very strong message to every LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) young person in Ireland and every LGBT young person in the world.”

Health Minister Leo Varadkar, who revealed he was gay in a radio interview in January, said the referendum resembled a “social revolution.”

The proposal was backed by all political parties, championed by big employers and endorsed by celebrities, all hoping it would mark a transformation in a country that was long regarded as one of the most socially conservative in Western Europe.

Men walk past a Yes vote campaign graffiti in central Dublin as Ireland holds a referendum on gay ma …

Only a third of the country backed the decriminalization of gay sex for men over 17 in 1993, according to a poll at the time. A supreme court judge in 1983 said homosexuality was “morally wrong” and contributed to depression and suicide.

“This is a big placard from the people of Ireland to the rest of the world saying this is the way forward,” said David Norris, who began a campaign for gay rights in the late 1970s.

The Catholic Church, whose dominance of Irish politics collapsed in the wake of a series of sex scandals in the early 1990s, still teaches that homosexual activity is a sin. But it limited its ‘No’ campaigning to sermons to its remaining flock, a marked contrast with active public opposition to similar moves in France and elsewhere.

Instead, lay groups led the opposition by raising concerns over parenthood and surrogacy rights for gay couples. Many believe the recognition of the legal rights of same-sex couples in 2009 is sufficient.

One of the main opponents of the bill conceded minutes after the first boxes were opened.

“Everyone seems to be predicting a ‘yes’ … and that seems to be the case at the moment. It’s disappointing,” said John Murray from Catholic think tank the Iona Institute.

State broadcaster RTE said up to 80 percent of voters backed the ‘Yes’ campaign in some working-classing areas of Dublin. The vote was much closer in many rural areas, but the vast majority of constituencies appeared likely to back ‘Yes’, RTE said.

At the main count center, ‘Yes’ supporters embraced, cried and waved rainbow flags as the high approval rate became clear.

“It’s very hard for it to sink in, inside screaming and jumping already but I’m just waiting for that exact moment when I can say it,” said Ger O’Keefe, 27, a gay ‘Yes’ campaigner from Waterford.

Kaduna: El Rufai sends signals as clash looms over N2.7billion SURE-P fund

Kaduna state governor-elect, Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i, a former Minister of the FCT, has always been associated with controversy and barely a week to his inauguration, sections of Kaduna residents are already basking in the euphoria of what they regard as a possible return to sanity and transparency in the business of governance. As May 29 approaches and for a state that is often described as difficult to govern, developments in Kaduna within the week may have given clear indications regarding how El-Rufa’i intends to conduct the affairs of the state.
Members of the APC caucus at the House of Assembly were the first to fire the warning shot when on Friday, May 15, they raised the alarm that outgoing governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero requested the Legislature to approve his decision to disburse the 2014 SURE-P funds for the 23 local government areas, amounting to N2.744 billion.
Mallam El- Rufai
Mallam El- Rufai
The protesting legislators described the move as suspicious and fraudulent arguing that, “there is no how a local government council can judiciously execute any meaningful projects within two weeks considering the fact that diligent due process and financial regulations have to be followed.”
The lawmakers said that the governor’s request to use 50 per cent of the money to fund a road project within the Kaduna metropolis was not acceptable. Moreover, they argued further that the funds in question had already been indicated in the handing over notes of the outgoing government.

Apparently still agitated over the matter, El-Rufa’i issued a statement on Monday warning that on assumption of office, he would “deal with” all those found to have been involved in the  disbursement of the funds. “Our government will certainly insist on accountability and no one should be in any doubt about our resolve, be it the instigators of any impropriety or those who facilitated and executed it,” El-Rufa’i warned.

By Tuesday, the governor-elect was sure that Yero had actually disbursed the funds even before seeking approval of the House of Assembly, prompting him to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, through the APC transition committee.
I am not controversial
The last may not have been heard of the SURE-P standoff  even as El-Rufa’i has consistently disassociated himself from the controversy tag attached to his person.
It was through his ministerial position that El-Rufa’i became a household name in Nigeria, essentially due to his controversial land and housing reforms at the FCT and the programme earned him the nickname of Mr Demolition with the tag of “Giant.”
His reforms swept through the FCT and environs, affecting the rich and the poor alike and perhaps for the first time, El-Rufa’i reportedly stepped on the toes of some people hitherto considered untouchable in society. Some media reports also describe El-Rufa’i as stubborn. “I am vertically challenged,” El-Rufa’i admitted in in a recent interview because he is actually of comparatively little height.
According to him, “I do not know what you mean by controversial but I have always maintained that I am not controversial. Look at me, I am not big and I am not very strong. Until 1999 when I became the DG of Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE), no one had ever heard of me. If I was a controversial person you would have heard of me. I think my fortune or misfortune in public life is that I tend to get the most difficult assignments that every other person is scared of doing. My first real job in government was DG of the BPE and my job was to sell public assets.
That is controversial. It is not El-Rufa’i that was controversial, it was the assignment because people are used to government managing everything. Some of these things are difficult to do and in this country if you want to do the job as written in the books, you are given all sorts of names and tags, controversial is one of them. I am not controversial, I mind my business. But once I am given a job and I agree to do it, I do it with all my heart and as Minister of the FCT which is one of the most difficult jobs, I did my job to the best of my ability. I do not think that the issue is whether I was controversial or not. The question you should ask me is whether I left Abuja better than I met it.”
The Kaduna challenge
If El-Rufa’i considers administering the FCT as one of the most difficult jobs, then managing the affairs of Kaduna may present a greater challenge. Described as a mini Nigeria, Kaduna has well over 50 different ethnic communities each with its distinct language and culture most of which are concentrated in the southern part of the state.
Through out the electioneering campaign, El-Rufa’i also adopted the APC ‘change’ slogan and for the Governor-elect, Kaduna needs the change perhaps more than any other state in the country. Ravaged by several years of ethno-religious conflicts, Kaduna has also become notorious for series of unsolved killings in its communities in both the southern and northern parts. The third most populous state  in Nigeria after Kano and Lagos, with a population of about eight million people, the Muslim Hausa and Fulani dominate the northern population while Christians dominate the southern part.
For several years running, successive administrations in  Kaduna have not been able to find solution to the intractable religious question that has continued to shake the state’s foundation. Perhaps, the bloody Shariah riots in February and May 2000 dealt Kaduna the most devastating blow in its history as residents began to adopt segregated lifestyle in Kaduna metropolis with majority Muslims preferring to reside in the northern part of the city while the Christians consider the southern axis as haven, in terms of security.
But El-Rufa’i has since pledged to return sanity to the area, assuring that, “we are ready to restore the civilised notion of political power as a platform for service, a tool for change and an enabler of order, security, harmony, peace and prosperity. We are committed to fostering a secure, peaceful environment that gives the confidence to all the residents of the state to make the most of their talents.
We intend to work with all communities in Kaduna state without fear or favour. We are  all equal  partners and stakeholders in this state. There will be no discrimination in Kaduna state on the basis of gender, ethnicity or religion.
Appointments and nominations into the incoming cabinet and government will be primarily on the basis of integrity and determined strictly by competence, capacity and capability. We are aware of your justifiably high expectations of our government. We will do our utmost to meet them  but we shall need your patience, sacrifice and support.”

The Number One Relationship Problem, According To Therapists — and How to Fix It

What couples fight about behind closed doors—and how to address it. (Photo: Kate Powers)
Nigerian couples, please take note of this information.
Studies have shown that sex and money are two of the leading causes for divorce, but statistics don’t always tell the whole story. We reached out to a handful of top relationship therapists to find out what the #1 problem they come across in couples. And believe it or not, neither sex nor money came up once.

Of course, relationships are complex and complicated, and no two marriages are the same. But each expert immediately rattled off a super common—and often extremely reparable—issue they see arise again and again and again.

Whether you’re a year into matrimonial bliss or celebrating a decade of wedlock, you’ll benefit big-time from this romance wisdom. In fact, you don’t even have to be hitched to learn a thing or two about love.

You’re Bad at Communicating

“The number one problem—though I prefer the word challenge—in marriage is indeed effective communication,” said psychotherapist Laura Young. “This includes how to argue with your spouse and not threaten to leave the relationship during a fight, as well as how to recognize—perhaps remember—that the annoying behaviors you feel are now intolerable have probably always been there. Perhaps you even felt they were adorable at one point.”

Although communicating better is the kind of thing you can learn, knowing how to do it in a more effective way is even easier if it’s done from the start of the relationship. “In the past few months, I’ve seen a significant increase in folks seeking ‘pre-marital’ therapy, which is so encouraging,” said Young. “At the beginning, both partners are more willing to discuss their differences and openly explore how they can increase their awareness as well as acceptance that they balance each other out. Married couples who have gotten hardwired in their dance of hurtfulness can, sadly, become so myopic that they would rather be right than happy.”

You’re Not Having Enough Fun Together

When you’ve been with someone for so long, the definition of date night inevitably loses its meaning. After all, the two of you Seamless and Netflix and pound away on your laptops side-by-side almost every night. Surely that counts? Spoiler: Sorry, it doesn’t.

“Couples spend too much time on the ‘business’ of being a married couple and not enough time staying connected, having fun together,” said therapist Lauren Urban-Colacicco. “In order for a relationship to continue to be successful, it’s necessary to foster the romantic and emotional connection between partners. Dates are extremely important, as trite as it sounds.”

You’re Too Busy

“Couples time-starve their relationships,” said psychotherapist and marriage counselor Jean Fitzpatrick. “After the initial intense experience of being in love, they don’t recognize that their marriage needs nurturing. They let it run on autopilot and eventually start bickering a lot, or get bored with each other, or intimacy disappears, or someone has an affair.”

It’s crucial to make time for your marriage just like you make time for, say, exercise. Think of it as an investment for your health—because honestly, it is. “There’s nothing intrinsically bad about work or children or socializing or devices, but couples need to put their relationship on their calendar. They need daily rituals of connection and regular, meaningful and fun couple times.”

You’re Insensitive—Or Too Sensitive

Feelings get hurt. It happens! But if it’s not handled well, the resentment and anger manifests, and suddenly, you realize you’ve been silent-treatmenting each other for three days.

“What comes up a lot is someone misunderstanding the other person’s motive,” said marriage and sex therapist Dr. Jane Greer. “One person will say something or do something that in no way is intended to be antagonistic or hostile, and yet, whatever’s said or done is interpreted as thoughtless or hurtful. When the other person reacts in anger, the person who said or did it is immediately confounded and bewildered, and launches into an explanation—which only digs them into a deeper hole.”

Whether or not you feel like you did anything wrong, Greer says it’s important to express empathy for your partner’s bruised feelings. “If your partner is upset by something, your default reply has to be, ‘I’m sorry that’s how you feel,‘” says Greer. “If they feel like they didn’t do anything wrong, 99 out of 100 people feel no reason to apologize.” And as for the wounded, it’s important to pause for a breather before taking everything personally. Says Greer: “I teach people to say, ‘Look I’m really upset by what you said or did. Whether you meant it to be this way or not, here’s how I experienced it.’”

You’re Codependent

Turns out there’s a lot of truth to the whole loving-yourself-before-you-love-someone-else idea. Rushing into a relationship before you have a good handle on who you are—or who you want to be—never ends well.

“Some people are in relationships to help fill a void, or fix what they’re lacking or what they feel insecure about,” said Dr. Daniel Selling, psychologist and director of Williamsburg Therapy Group. “A lot of it comes down to accepting who our partners are, rather than trying to bend them to who we want them to be. A lot of people enter into relationships because there’s attraction, there’s chemistry, there’s a lot that they like—but there’s also a lot of fantasy that they will become who they want them to be. Couples that really thrive accept the good and the bad of each other.”

If you feel like these therapists are looking straight inside your relationship (creepy, right?), start the conversation with your partner. Identifying and agreeing on the issues is the first step to building that bulletproof marriage.

Little Girl’s Temper Tantrum at the White House Leaves President Obama Speechless

It’s awkward enough when your toddler goes into meltdown mode in a crowded store or on an airplane; the dirty looks and side eye from strangers can be pretty unnerving. But what do you do when the crying fit happens in the White House in front of the President and First Lady of the United States?

Apparently you ride it out and try to see the humor in the situation. That’s what the Moser family seemed to do when daughter Claudia had a full-tilt tantrum as the family was preparing for a Passover Seder with the Obamas this past April.

“This really might be the best picture ever; my niece Claudia throwing a fit at Passover,” author Benjamin Moser just tweeted this week, sharing the meltdown with the world. His sister and Claudia’s mom, journalist Laura Moser, also tweeted the photo. “My daughter is an internet meme!” she wrote.

As the photo shows, President Obama kept his cool. He appears to be speechless and slightly bemused by the sight of an adorable little girl with her face buried in the carpet. He is a dad after all, and teen daughters Malia and Sasha’s tantrum days must still be fresh in his memory.

As for Michelle Obama, she seems to be looking on in sympathy. All parents can relate, and the Mosers and the Obamas are taking it in stride.

After a massive manhunt that spanned several states, the US police has captured 34 year old Daron Dylon Wint, who is accused of killing a wealthy D.C. couple, their son and a housekeeper. Wint was captured just before midnight Thursday in Northeast Washington, D.C., the Washington Post reports.

The fugitive (left) was traveling in a white Chevrolet Cruze along with two women, one of whom was driving. Federal marshals who had been tracking the fugitive stopped the car near 10th Street and Rhode Island Avenue NE and took Wint and the two women into custody.

The Cruze was following behind a white box truck. Two black males inside the box truck were also detained by federal marshals for questioning.

The feds recovered $10,000 in cash from the box truck. The money is believed to be part of the $40,000 in cash that was reportedly stolen from the home of CEO Savvas Savopoulos on May 14.

The bodies of Savvas, 46, his wife, Amy, 47, their 10-year-old son, Philip, and their housekeeper, Veralicia “Vera” Figueroa, 57, in Savvas’ burning mansion in swanky Woodley Park on Thursday, May 14.

Savvas’ personal assistant delivered the $40,000 to the house on Thursday morning. The cash drop proceeded a flurry of phone calls involving Savvas, the assistant, a banker and an accountant on Thursday morning. The last phone call in or out of the home came at 11:56 a.m. Thursday. The $4.5 million mansion was set ablaze with the four people inside a few hours later.

Police say Philip was tortured in an attempt to get money out of his father. The boy suffered the most wounds of all the victims, police say.

The adults were found dead in chairs on the second floor. They had been beaten with a blunt object and stabbed, their bodies doused in gasoline. The fire was confined to the 2nd floor where all the bodies were found, police say.

Wint apparently paused during the massacre to order 2 large pizzas to be delivered from a nearby Domino’s Pizza franchise on Wisconsin Ave.

A delivery man told police he left the pizzas at the front door of Savvas’ mansion on Wednesday just before midnight. An envelope of cash for the pizzas was left outside the house.
Police linked DNA recovered from the pizza crust to Wint, who has a long criminal history that includes assault, stalking and rape.

On Thursday, May 21, police contacted Wint’s girlfriend in Nrooklyn, NY who said Wint stayed with her then returned to D.C. with plans to surrender to police there.

Wint reportedly worked for American Iron Works, a iron and steel distributor that supplied material to large construction projects. Savvas was CEO and president of AIW.

Court records lists Wint as a certified welder.

Wint’s father, Dennis, reportedly filed a restraining order against him. In November 2005, Dennis Wint accused his son of threatening him and his wife, Pamela.

Police ordered Wint to stay away from his father’s home, but Dennis Wint said Daron “stood in the street in front of the house and continued to threaten me and my wife. I also have an 8-year-old child who was terrified.”

A year later, a housemate accused Wint of punching him in an argument over losud music. And a female associate said Wint drunkenly groped her at the bar where she was waitressing. A judge refused to convict Wint of sexual assault.

Lanier confirmed Wint was the suspect seen running in a blurry surveillance video taken near the area with Amy Savopoulos’ Porsche 911 was abandoned and torched in a church parking lot on Thursday, May 14.

His father’s home was less than a mile from the church.

The pastor of a South African church – named End Times Disciples Ministries – has made headlines for his unorthodox manner of carrying out deliverances on female members of his church. The photos causing all the online uproar were first shared on the church’s Facebook page but they deleted them after the backlash. However, some fastest fingers already saved the photos and the topic has gone viral even outside FB.

After the women and girls are made to remove their clothes, guess what the pastor, who may possibly be more insane than his congregants, does? He sits on them, steps and kicks their backside, and even jumps on them! Don’t believe it, pictures don’t lie. See below..
